How To Take Good Care Of Your Sewage System

Introduction

If you are a homeowner, then you know dealing with home repairs is never fun. In addition to the stress that home repairs can cause, they could also end up costing the homeowner a lot of money. Besides making sure appliances work, something else that needs to be taken care of is your sewage system. If you are not sure how to maintain your plumbing system then we will advise you on things that can be done to maintain your plumbing system.

Don’t Go Too Long Between Inspections And Pumps

Most of us especially when we are growing up visit the doctor. Your septic system needs to be examined by a licensed professional. It is recommended that inspections should not be more than three years apart. Sludge should be removed from the septic tank every three to five years. If you don’t have a normal septic system then you may want a professional to examine the system every 12 months.

Keep Records Of What A Professional Finds

When you have a professional checking out your septic tank, be sure to keep records of the levels that your professional examined. When you get a service report, it should bring to your attention if anything was fixed and if anything else needs to be fixed. If it is advised to have something fixed by a professional then it’s best to get those things fixed as soon as possible.

Don’t Waste Water

If your toilet is running or leaky then that toilet could be wasting what a normal family would use over the course of three days in one day. The septic system receives all the water that was in the toilet when it was flushed. If a family flushes the toilet less, then there is a smaller chance of problems in the septic tank. There are multiple things you can do to keep yourself from wasting water:

Replace Old Toilets With High-Efficiency Toilets

About a quarter of the water that is used by a family is from the toilet. High-Efficiency toilets flush a lot less water than normal toilets. While it might be expensive to replace normal toilets with high-efficiency toilets in the short term, it will save you money and water in the long term.

When it comes to shower heads and faucets, there are aerators and flow restrictors you can use so you don’t waste too much water when you are washing your hands or taking a shower.

Use The Correct Settings on Your Washer

If you have a small amount of laundry and you use the settings as if you had a large amount then that results in the waste of water. When you wash clothes, it’s best to pick the correct setting and if your washer doesn’t let you do that, then only do laundry when you have a large load of laundry to do.

Get Rid Of Trash Correctly

Regardless of whether it’s flushed, torn apart in the garbage disposal, or released down the drain, it will end up in the septic tank. The more items that are disposed of these ways increase the chances you will have sewage problems in the future. It might seem normal to dispose of things down the toilet but unless it’s toilet paper or bodily waste then it would be best to get rid of that item in a garbage can even if the item is small enough to be flushed.

Don’t Pour Everything Down The Sink

Inside a septic tank, some bacteria break down then consume whatever was flushed. Depending on what you pour down the sink could kill this bacteria which would increase the chances of your septic tank filling up. If you want to prevent problems with your septic tank then it would be best to remember the following:

* If your drain is clogged use a drain snake or boiling water instead of chemicals sold in stores.
* Any kind of cooking grease will clog the drain. It’s best to dispose of that in the garbage after it is solidified in the fridge.
* If you have a garbage disposal, don’t overuse it. Anything the garbage disposal tears apart, there will be pieces that go down the drain.

If you follow these tips then you will not only minimize your chances of having problems with your sewage system but you also could save money on your water bill. Home repairs are always stressful so it’s best to avoid them when it’s possible.
