Emergency Plumbing FAQ

What are common plumbing emergencies?

1. Clogged Toilets

Nothing is worse than a toilet that doesn’t want to flush. The water pump must be clogged or something is wrong. Check the filter and the connection and make sure it’s working correctly. You should get your water tested regularly to make sure that it is free of harmful contaminants. This might come from too much toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, or even waste itself.

Flushing the toilet will sometimes cause water to spill into the bathroom floor. This is a serious problem if this is the only toilet in the home.

Get ready for a surprise when you call in the professionals to treat your plumbing problem.

2. Clogged Sink or Tubs

It’s quite another when you have a sink that doesn’t drain properly and is slow. It’s a different thing entirely when the pump won’t drain at all. You have to use a non-draining sink to wash your hands or brush your teeth. This becomes a serious emergency when you don’t have any other options.

This situation can become a serious problem. If it is not kept under control, it will begin to pile up.

3. Burst Pipes

Like it sounds, this occurs when a pipe breaks for some reason. When there is a burst, the flow of water will be very strong and it will rush out very quickly. If the water pipes are old, they might need to be replaced. There is no problem with this. It might just need a quick service.  To prevent this from happening, keep the temperature in your home above freezing. If you want to take the extra step to avoid potential problems with your pipes, it’s always a good idea to keep an eye out for potential problems before they get worse.

4. No Hot Water

A lot of people aren’t too keen on taking a cold shower. The winters are absolutely brutal. This can also become a problem when running the dishwasher or the washing machine. When a cold spell lasts several days, you need to do something to fix the problem. It could be an issue with the water heater. When a water heater goes bad, the main causes include a broken heating element, sludge build-up in the tank, a broken dip tube, or an air leak from around the flue.

All of these things can be fixed by your local emergency plumber.

If you have leaks in your water heater, you should get them fixed right away.

5. Leaky Water Heater

An aged water heater is more prone to leak and drip than one that is new. The water heater that’s been in your home for a number of years will likely be leaking, especially if the water is leaking out from the sides and the bottom of the water heater. Emergency repairs need to be made as soon as possible. If they aren’t, then it could be very costly. Water bills will go up if repairs aren’t done right away.

You don’t know what the exact problem is, but you are guessing it is a water heater leak.

An example of this would be having a valve that’s leaking. It’s possible to fix it, but if it’s an older one or has extensive rust, then a replacement is probably the best option. Either one will work. We’ll inspect the unit and make sure it’s in good shape and then let you know which one of the two choices will work the best over the long term.

6. Running Toilet

Water in the toilet is never a good thing. If it’s running constantly, you need to fix it right away. This is an indication that the toilet may be clogged. If it continues to run, check your pipes for water or toilet paper in the toilet. This means that when you flush your toilet, a lot of water is wasted. Running toilets can use up to 200 gallons of water each day. They’re also very noisy. Running toilets can be caused by a worn out flapper valve. This makes sure the toilet flushes when you pull the chain without wasting water.

If your toilet is clogged due to sediment buildup, your toilet needs to be emptied and cleaned.

If you live in an area with hard water, it’s very likely you have calcium buildup on your appliances.

A plumber can inspect your toilet to identify the cause of the problem and provide a repair before wasting water.

7. Sump Pump Failure

When it rains, or if you get a lot of water in your basement, you’ll need a sump pump. A sump pump is a device that protects your home from flooding in case of extreme rain. Basement and crawl spaces are usually below surface level and are therefore especially vulnerable to flooding. If your sump pump fails, it may get stuck or it may not work at all. The water pump could be clogged, but it might not be the problem.  If your sump pump fails during a storm, your home could flood.

Plumbing emergencies happen throughout the year, but spring and summer are especially prone to leaks.

8. Sewage Backup

Sewage backups can sometimes be hard to detect until they happen.  A sewer is where all waste goes after it’s flushed. When it backs up, this waste comes back into your home. In addition to being very unsightly, it is also unhealthy and dangerous to the people in your house. Since the waste isn’t sanitized, people may get sick.

When you notice a sewage backup happening, you should call a plumber to fix it. You should then make sure to clean with plenty of bleach.

9. Severe Leaks

A small leak may be postponed for a couple of days.  You should know how to deal with water issues if they ever appear. If you are constantly throwing buckets of water out every single day from the same leak, you need to get someone to fix it right away. You can try to use tape to prevent the pipe from leaking as much, but it might not be enough to hold back a serious leak.

When you run into a plumbing problem, the first thing you should do is relax. We have professional plumbers who can come to your house and fix anything from burst pipes to clogged toilets.

10. Damaged Washing Machine Hoses

Most washing machines include a drainage hose for removing excess water from the wash cycle. A broken hose is often caused by the hose being damaged.

It’s hard to fix or replace this yourself, so call an emergency plumbing service.

Do I need an emergency plumber?

You should always know what to do when you encounter a plumbing emergency. Keep calm and stay on top of things. If you have leaks in your house, make sure to turn off the water first.  When a gas leak is detected, turn off the main valve and improve the ventilation.  By using some first aid remedies, you can reduce or stop any further damage and dangers.

If you have a leak in your sink or a broken pipe, contact an emergency plumber as soon as possible. No matter what your problem is, don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help you right away.
