Adelaide Hot Water Systems: Gas, Electric, Solar

Adelaide Hot Water Systems: Gas, Electric, Solar

When selecting a hot water system, consider your individual hot water requirements, available space and budget, as well as the local climate. Hot water systems are used for bathing, washing, cooking or heating and can range in size, cost-effectiveness and environmental impact depending on their design and energy source. Gas, electricity or solar power may be employed to either supply heated water from a storage tank or generate it upon demand while some systems can also use geothermal sources to produce energy.

Gas Hot Water Systems

Gas hot water systems are devices that use natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to heat water for domestic or commercial use. They can be classified into three main types: storage systems, instantaneous or continuous flow systems and solar hot water heaters with instantaneous gas boosting.

Storage systems have a tank that stores hot water and keeps it at a constant temperature until it is needed. They can be installed indoors or outdoors and have different capacities depending on your hot water needs. They are generally cheaper to buy but more expensive to run than other types of gas hot water systems.

Instantaneous or continuous flow systems heat water as it passes through a heat exchanger without storing it in a tank. They can provide unlimited hot water at a set temperature and only use gas when hot water is required. They are more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than storage systems but may require higher gas pressure and flow rate to operate properly.

Solar/gas hot water heaters use solar collectors to capture heat from the sun and transfer it to a storage tank. They can reduce your gas consumption and greenhouse gas emissions significantly but may not work well in cloudy or cold days. To ensure reliable hot water supply, they are usually equipped with an instantaneous gas booster that kicks in when the solar energy is insufficient.

Heat Pump Hot Water Systems

Heat pump hot water systems are devices that use electricity to move heat from the surrounding air to a water storage tank. They are more energy efficient than conventional electric resistance water heaters because they do not generate heat directly but transfer it from a low-temperature source to a high-temperature one. Heat pump hot water systems can reduce your electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions significantly but may not work well in very cold or hot climates. They also have higher upfront costs and maintenance requirements than other types of water heaters.

Heat pump hot water systems work by using a fan to pull outside air into an evaporator that contains a special refrigerant. The warm air turns the refrigerant from liquid to gas, which is then compressed by a compressor. The compressed gas passes through a heat exchanger that transfers its heat to the water in the tank. The cooled gas then returns to the evaporator and repeats the cycle. Heat pump hot water systems have different operating modes that allow you to adjust their performance and efficiency according to your needs and preferences.

Electric Hot Water Systems

Electric storage water heaters are devices that use electricity to heat water for domestic or commercial use. They can be classified into two main types: tankless or on-demand systems and storage or tank systems. Tankless systems heat water as it flows through a heating element without storing it in a tank. They can provide continuous hot water at a set temperature and save energy by only using electricity when hot water is needed. They are more expensive to buy but cheaper to run than storage systems. Storage systems have a tank that stores hot water and keeps it at a constant temperature until it is needed. They can be installed indoors or outdoors and have different capacities depending on your hot water needs. They are cheaper to buy but more expensive to run than tankless systems. Electric hot water systems vary in size, efficiency, cost and environmental impact depending on their type and design. Some factors to consider when choosing an electric hot water system are your electricity tariff, available space, budget and climate.

Solar Water Systems

Solar hot water systems are devices that use solar energy to heat water for domestic or commercial use. They can reduce your reliance on fossil fuels, lower your energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions, and provide you with hot water even in remote areas. Solar hot water systems consist of two main components: solar collectors and storage tanks. Solar collectors are panels that are usually installed on the roof or ground. They contain tubes or pipes filled with water or a heat transfer fluid that absorbs heat from the sun. The heated fluid then circulates to the storage tank, where it transfers its heat to the water. The storage tank can be located indoors or outdoors, depending on the system design and climate. Solar hot water systems can be classified into two main types: active and passive. Active systems have pumps and controls that move the fluid between the collectors and the tank. Passive systems rely on natural convection or thermosiphon to circulate the fluid without any mechanical assistance. Active systems are more efficient and reliable than passive systems but also more expensive and complex.

Stay Safe – Replace Your TPR Valve

Your hot water system’s TPR (temperature pressure relief) valve is a safety valve that stops pressure in your tank from getting too high. If heat or pressure builds up in your tank, the valve releases water to relieve pressure. If pressure builds up but the valve fails to work, your hot water system becomes a bomb ready to explode.

Manufacturers advise TPRs are replaced every five years or less to keep your system and your family safe.

Repairs, Servicing & Installation

At Royal Flush plumbing, we take your comfort and safety seriously. We repair, service and install all types of hot water systems with our renowned high standards and attention to detail, to keep your hot water running freely.

Node Replacements

The anode is a magnesium rod inside your tank that attracts corrosive minerals, so that they damage the rod instead of the walls of your tank. Once this rod is corroded, the minerals will damage your tank instead, causing it to rust and leak.

Like the temperature pressure relief valve, you need to get your sacrificial anode replaced every five years.
