Pipe relining

Pipe relining

Most of the time, there is really no need to purchase a completely new pipe when we can simply fix leaks with drain relinings. This fights against organic decay brought on by roots, old clay, and other numerous factors.

Instead of undergoing the difficult task of digging up and replacing the old pipe, with Royal Flush Plumbing, there’s a far simpler and more cost-effective solution. Damaged sewer or stormwater pipe? We’re always here for you 24/7 for all of your concerns.

Drain relining repairs broken, collapsed and missing pipes, by inserting an epoxy resin liner that moulds to the inside of the damaged part of the pipe. Not only does relining prove just as effective as replacement, it also remains more resilient to future damage from tree root infestations.

Why is pipe relining needed?

Drain relining is a method of repairing damaged drainage pipes by fixing a new pipe called a lining into an existing damaged pipe without excavation. It is a form of no-dig repair technology that utilises a form of drain sleeve similar to glass reinforced plastic. Drain relining is needed for pipes that are cracked, corroded, leaking, root-infested or misaligned. These problems can cause water damage, mould growth, health risks and increased bills if left untreated. Therefore, drain relining is a cost-effective, clean and durable solution that can restore the functionality and integrity of the pipes.

Drain relining works by using cured-in-place pipe technology which involves inserting a flexible resin liner into the damaged pipe and curing it with hot water or steam. The process consists of several steps such as inspection, clearing of debris, re-inspection, preparing the lining, installation, curing and final re-inspection. The result is a new pipe within a pipe that has a smooth interior that can improve water flow and resist corrosion and root intrusion.

Drain relining has several advantages over traditional methods such as excavation or replacement. Some of these advantages are:

  • No disturbance of utilities: Drain relining does not require digging up the ground or disrupting other services such as gas or electricity lines. This reduces the risk of accidents and damage to property.
  • Service connections reestablished from above ground: Drain relining can reconnect service connections such as branch lines or lateral pipes from above ground without cutting into the main pipe. This saves time and money and minimizes disruption.
  • Long-lasting results: Drain relining can extend the life of the pipes by up to 50 years depending on the type and quality of materials used. The new lining can withstand high pressure and temperature changes and prevent further deterioration.
  • Cleaner and less expensive than traditional repair: Drain relining does not create dust or debris that can pollute the environment or affect human health. It also requires less labor and equipment than excavation or replacement which lowers the cost.

What are the benefits of drain relining?

Drain relining is a method of repairing damaged drainage pipes by fixing a new pipe called a lining into an existing damaged pipe without excavation. It is a form of no-dig repair technology that utilises a form of drain sleeve similar to glass reinforced plastic. Drain relining has several benefits over traditional methods such as excavation or replacement. Some of these benefits are:

  • It is less intrusive than the traditional process. Drain relining does not require digging up the ground or disrupting other services such as gas or electricity lines. This reduces the risk of accidents and damage to property. It also minimizes noise, dust and debris that can affect human health and the environment.
  • It prevents leaks and roots from accessing the pipes. Drain relining creates a seamless and jointless pipe within a pipe that can seal any cracks, holes or gaps in the original pipe. This prevents water leakage that can cause water damage, mould growth, health risks and increased bills. It also prevents root intrusion that can block or break the pipes, especially old clay drainage pipes.
  • It is more cost-effective than the traditional alternative. Drain relining requires less labor and equipment than excavation or replacement which lowers the cost. It also saves money on landscaping, paving or restoring the surface after digging up the ground. Moreover, it reduces water loss and improves water flow which can lower water bills.
  • It is durable and reliable. Drain relining can extend the life of the pipes by up to 50 years depending on the type and quality of materials used. The new lining can withstand high pressure and temperature changes and prevent further deterioration.

What are the different types of drain relining?

There are different types of drain relining methods available, depending on the size, shape, material, and condition of the pipe. Some of the most common types are:

  • Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) relining: This method uses a flexible liner coated with a resin that hardens when exposed to heat or ultraviolet light. The liner is inserted into the pipe using air or water pressure and then cured to form a tight bond with the old pipe. CIPP relining can be used for pipes with bends, joints, and diameter changes.
  • Slip lining: This method uses a new pipe that is slightly smaller than the old one and slides it into the existing pipe. The gap between the two pipes is filled with grout or other sealant to prevent leakage. Slip lining can be used for straight pipes with uniform diameter.
  • Fold-and-form lining: This method uses a liner that is folded flat and inserted into the pipe using air or water pressure. Then heat is applied to re-form it to fit the shape of the old pipe. Fold-and-form lining can be used for pipes with bends and diameter changes.
  • Pipe bursting: This method uses a device that breaks up the old pipe while pulling a new pipe behind it. The new pipe replaces the old one in its original position. Pipe bursting can be used for pipes that are severely damaged or collapsed.

Each type of drain relining has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on factors such as cost, durability, environmental impact, installation time, and disruption. Therefore, it is important to consult with a professional plumber who can assess your situation and recommend the best option for your needs.

How does drain relining work?

By inserting an epoxy resin liner that conforms to the interior of the damaged pipe, drain relining replaces missing, collapsed, and broken pipes. Relining is not only equally efficient as a replacement, but it is also more resistant to future damage from tree root infestations.

  • A CCTV camera is sent down the drain to properly assess the damage’s extent, and determine which and what part of the pipe needs relining.
  • Flushing out a pipe’s damaged area using our hydro-jet drain cleaner.
  • Inserting the epoxy resin liner and bladder through the inspection point
  • By inflating the bladder with air, it pushes against the liner, moulding its shape onto the existing pipe.
  • Pipe testing, and final inspection using our CCTV camera.

What are the steps involved in drain relining?

The steps involved in drain relining are:

  • Inspection: The first step is to inspect the condition of the pipes using CCTV cameras or other devices. This helps to locate and assess the extent of damage, such as cracks, holes, corrosion, tree roots, or blockages. It also helps to determine which type of drain relining method is suitable for each case.
  • Cleaning: The second step is to clean the pipes using high-pressure water jets or other tools. This removes any debris, grease, scale, or roots that may interfere with the relining process. It also prepares the surface of the old pipe for better adhesion with the new liner.
  • Re-inspection: The third step is to re-inspect the pipes after cleaning to ensure that they are ready for relining. Any remaining obstructions or defects are identified and removed before proceeding to the next step.
  • Preparing and installing the lining: The fourth step is to prepare and install the lining inside the old pipe. Depending on which type of drain relining method is used (such as CIPP, slip lining, fold-and-form lining, or pipe bursting), this may involve inflating a flexible liner coated with resin into the pipe using air or water pressure; sliding a new pipe into the old one; folding a flat liner into the pipe shape using heat; or breaking up the old pipe while pulling a new one behind it. The lining creates a seamless and durable pipe within a pipe that restores the function and integrity of the original pipe.
  • Curing: The fifth step is to cure the lining inside the old pipe. This involves applying heat or ultraviolet light to harden the resin and form a tight bond between the liner and the old pipe. Curing time may vary depending on factors such as temperature, humidity, diameter, length, and type of resin used.
  • Final re-inspection: The final step is to re-inspect the relined pipes using CCTV cameras or other devices. This confirms that the relining process was successful and that there are no leaks, gaps, wrinkles, or other defects in the new pipes. It also verifies that the flow rate, capacity, pressure, and alignment of the pipes are optimal.
